'Infinity Paws' Sends Marvel Pets Across the Cosmos for New Crossover Series

Writer Jason Loo sets the stage for 'Infinity Paws' and the new adventures of Jeff the Land Shark, Chewie, Alpine, Liho, Lucky, and Coal.

From the streets of New York City to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, Marvel's most beloved pets always manage to find themselves in the middle of some hijinks. In INFINITY PAWS (2024), a new Infinity Comic crossover series from writer Jason Loo and artist Nao Fuji, an attack on the city will send Jeff the Land Shark, Chewie, Alpine, Liho, and newcomer Coal on an adventure that spans the cosmos—and they'll run into a few fan-favorite heroes along the way.

Speaking to Marvel.com, Loo shared the joys of working on a project like INFINITY PAWS. He revealed the inspiration behind Coal, Ghost Rider's Spirit Cat of Vengeance, as well as the scope of the new series. He also teased some guest stars, a few key locations, a couple wacky situations, and so much more.

MARVEL.COM: How did you narrow down the roster of heroes for your INFINITY PAWS team?

JASON LOO: I don't think I did any narrowing down on our animal roster. [laughs] I managed to cram in most of Marvel's animal kingdom throughout the series, on top of a brand new beastly creature! But we do follow my faves Chewie, Alpine, Liho, Lucky, Jeff the Land Shark, and Coal in every episode, since I got to work with most of them in the MARVEL MEOW AND PIZZA DOG INFINITY COMIC.

MARVEL.COM: I know it's like picking a favorite child, but which main hero were you most looking forward to writing and why?

JASON LOO: I'm going to be very biased because I am working with my favorite child and that's Coal, who's based on my cat Boris. Coal is Robbie Reyes' cat in the 616 universe who I introduced in MARVEL MEOW & PIZZA DOG, and we will finally see Coal's full transformation as the Spirit Cat of Vengeance in INFINITY PAWS. He looks so hellishly wicked! I don't know if fans are ready for him.

MARVEL.COM: Set the scene for us. Where does INFINITY PAWS find our heroes when the first issue picks up?

JASON LOO: It starts with chaos right out of the gate! Kree invasion in New York City with the Avengers defending the city while our animal heroes are scrambling for cover. What could happen next?

MARVEL.COM: INFINITY PAWS is peppered with cameos from other awesome Marvel heroes as well. Without giving too much away, can you tease who we might see along the way?

JASON LOO: It's a broad range of A-list to D-list characters from Earth and a bunch throughout the cosmos. Expect lots of surprises. After all, it's a big crossover event with these pets!

MARVEL.COM: What kind of challenges and villains will our heroes face on their journey?

JASON LOO: All sorts! Finding cozy hiding spots in Knowhere, falling for one of Alligator Loki's schemes, frolicking on an alien planet, a talent show, and other hijinks as they try to find their way home.

MARVEL.COM: Like IT'S JEFF, MARVEL MEOW, and MARVEL MUTTS before it, INFINITY PAWS doesn't use a lot of dialogue. As a writer, what were some of the challenges and joys of writing characters who don't speak much (or at all)?

JASON LOO: Working on the Marvel pets is always a delightful experience. I mean, yeah, it's pretty easy when there's very little dialogue in writing a script, but it's all about capturing the right emotional beats from panel to panel and our Marvel animal expert Nao Fuji is a master at laying out such beautiful art.

MARVEL.COM: Tell me a little about working with Nao Fuji. What did she bring to the series?

JASON LOO: Her art brings so much joy and life to the story. My week is made every time I see a new update from her in my inbox. I would come up with an idea or a character design and she would make it 100 times better! I'm so happy to work with her throughout this series. Her work really shines in every issue.

MARVEL.COM: What are you most excited for readers to see?

JASON LOO: The Spirit Cat of Vengeance. And tons of surprises that will make each fan point at their viewing device with excitement.

MARVEL.COM: How did the Infinity Comic format impact your approach to INFINITY PAWS?

JASON LOO: I feel like INFINITY PAWS was an accumulation of all the Marvel pet projects I've worked on in the Infinity Comic format. I have to thank editors Caitlin O'Connell and Lauren Bisom for bringing me on board to write and draw LUCKY THE PIZZA DOG, which was my very first Infinity Comic.

I've been learning the format on the job since then with the X-MEN UNLIMITED series, as well as MARVEL MEOW AND PIZZA DOG, then writing the COSMO THE SPACEDOG INFINITY COMIC, and the WHAT IS A FLERKEN? short. I got so familiar with all the Marvel pets, that to have them thrown in my sandbox to play with has been an exciting time!
