Al Ewing Brings the Thunder for 'Marvel/DC Thor/Shazam! Infinity Comic'

'Marvel/DC Thor/Shazam! Infinity Comic' writer Al Ewing explains why Thor and the Captain made a perfect match for his Infinity Comic crossover with DC Comics.

Lightning strikes twice in MARVEL/DC THOR/SHAZAM! INFINITY COMIC (2025) #1 by writer Al Ewing and artist Jethro Morales, Marvel Unlimited’s very own Infinity Comics crossover with DC Comics. Blending the mythology of both characters, this special issue pits Donald Blake and Billy Batson against one of the most evil villains in the universe—all while their powers are on the fritz! Speaking to Marvel.com, Ewing explained what makes Thor and the Captain a perfect match for this special Infinity Comic one-shot.

The new THOR/SHAZAM! INFINITY COMIC story is available on Marvel Unlimited, Marvel’s digital comics subscription service, to all new and existing subscribers. For a limited time, all fans can redeem a digital copy of this brand-new crossover story by using code CROSSOVER25 at Marvel.com/redeem. This free digital comic offer valid until 12/17/2025 11:59 PM ET.

MARVEL.COM: What intrigued you about a team-up between Thor and the Captain, specifically?

AL EWING: They’re both very mythical and magical characters. Thor lends himself to great epics, while the Captain feels more whimsical, charming, and poetic, but they can both swap those roles and stray into the other’s territory. I really thought Thor would fit right into a classic Shazam story, but also Shazam would work very well in the world of Classic Thor, so a story set in the past for both of them felt like the right move. The big connection between them, of course, is lightning, and magic lightning in particular, so we ended up playing a lot with that.

MARVEL.COM: Much of this issue takes place in the Rock of Eternity, home to the Wizard that gave the Captain his powers. What drew you to this setting, and how did it impact the direction you took the story in?

AL EWING: I figured we’d either need the Captain to travel to Asgard, or Thor to travel to the Captain’s turf, and the second one felt much more exciting to me. I’m a sucker for that classic Shazam feel, that’s part children’s story and part myth—the old Wizard summoning Billy to the rock that hangs outside time and space through a mystical subway ride, past statues on the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man… how can you not jump at the chance to write this stuff? I really wanted to put as much of that classic Shazam flavor in as I could; Jeff Smith proved back in The Monster Society of Evil that that stuff could really work in the modern day.

MARVEL.COM: What made Mister Mind the right villain for this story?

AL EWING: He’s brilliant! He’s a tiny little worm that’s also the most evil creature in the universe. It’s such a perfect, wonderful idea. There are other reasons to pick him, as well—I’m playing around a little with the original concept of Shazam as the magic word, [which] I think has a lot of juice. So, for reasons that will become very apparent, Mister Mind made a great foil for Thor…

MARVEL.COM: What did this crossover enable you to do with Thor as a character, that perhaps you haven’t had a chance to do during your runs on IMMORTAL THOR and MORTAL THOR?

AL EWING: IMMORTAL THOR was quite a serious book for the most part, telling a big, long-form story, while MORTAL THOR is much more down-to-earth. This is an opportunity to tell a story with Thor that’s between the two—a big, epic tale with Thor at full power that’s also a wild, fun done-in-one. It’s tonally different to any other Thor I’ve done lately.

MARVEL.COM: Tell me a little about working with artist Jethro Morales. What did he bring to this story?

AL EWING: Jethro’s been great! He really captured that Shazam magic, while at the same time creating a world that Thor could be part of. It’s been a lot of fun seeing the pages take shape.

MARVEL.COM: What are you most excited for readers to see?

AL EWING: Who holds Mjolnir at the end. I think Thor readers will appreciate it.
