New Mutants Lethal Legion: Meet the Team

Since the group first formed in the pages of Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod’s NEW MUTANTS (1982), the New Mutants have tackled such dangerous foes as the Sentinels, the Demon Bear, and more. Now, the team will take on the mysterious Lethal Legion in the pages of NEW MUTANTS LETHAL LEGION (2023). Here’s a breakdown of the New Mutant’s current roster as they gear up for the next fight of their lives.

Shela Sexton, AKA Escapade

Created by Charlie Jane Anders, Ro Stein, and Ted Brandt for MARVEL’S VOICES: PRIDE (2022) #1, Escapade is the newest member of the New Mutants and one of the Marvel Universe’s most recent additions. Escapade’s mutant ability allows her to switch locations, abilities, or items with someone physically near her. 

Originally, Sexton worked as a thief, but after a confrontation with Emma Frost and Destiny, she learned her actions would eventually result in the death of her best friend, Morgan Red. To protect him, Sexton agreed to go to Krakoa, where she eventually joined the New Mutants.

Martha Johansson, AKA Cerebella

Martha Johansson debuted as a powerful psychic in NEW X-MEN (2001) #118 by Grant Morrison and Ethan Van Sciver. As a girl, the U-Men captured her and removed her brain, later using her as a disembodied organ for her mental powers. She eventually ended up as a student at the Xavier Institute, where she took on the title of No-Girl and existed simply as a brain in a floating jar. 

On Krakoa, Johansson has undergone some pretty major changes. Following a confrontation with the Shadow King, a new body was created for her and she began using the codename Cerebella.

Gabby Kinney, AKA Scout

Debuting in ALL-NEW WOLVERINE (2015) #2 by Tom Taylor, David López, and David Navarrot, Scout is a clone of Laura Kinney—the daughter of James Howlett, AKA Wolverine, and Sarah Kinney—who was created by Alchemax Genetics. Like the other members of her family, Scout has a regenerative healing factor and bone claws. 

There was initially some question as to whether Scout qualified for Krakoa’s Resurrection Protocols, as clones generally do not. However, she was indeed returned to life following her death at the hands of the Shadow King, a murder that was investigated and handled by the New Mutants, with whom she has been training.

Dani Moonstar, AKA Mirage

A member of both the New Mutants and the Cheyenne Nation, Mirage debuted in the team’s eponymous 1982 graphic novel. Moonstar’s unique mutant ability allows her to create illusions that embody the fears, thoughts, and emotions of both herself and others. She is also able to create psionic arrows, among other things. On Krakoa, she uses her powers to help others—including her fellow New Mutants—heal from trauma.

Xuân Cao Manh, AKA Karma

Another founding member of the New Mutants, Karma debuted just before the group’s other original members. Created by Claremont and Frank Miller, she joined the Marvel Universe in MARVEL TEAM-UP (1972) #100. Originally hailing from Vietnam, Karma is a formidable telepath with the ability to psychically possess others. 

Prior to meeting Charles Xavier, Karma and her brother, Trân, were exploited for their mutant abilities by their uncle, Nguyen Ngoc Coy. While on Krakoa, Karma fought Mirage in the Crucible to have her brother resurrected and has since struck up a relationship with Gabrielle Diwa, AKA Galura.

James Proudstar, AKA Warpath

Created by Claremont and Sal Buscema, Proudstar debuted in NEW MUTANTS (1983) #16. The Apache Super Hero’s abilities include enhanced speed, strength, and endurance. In his early history, James held something of a grudge against the X-Men, as his brother, John Proudstar, had died in one of the group’s earliest missions. Later, though, James joined the New Mutants and has remained a key mutant hero ever since. 

On Krakoa, he serves as a member of the New Mutants, helping them train the next generation of heroes. He has also been reunited with John, whom the Five resurrected.

Rahne Sinclair, AKA Wolfsbane

Debuting in NEW MUTANTS alongside Mirage and various other key members of the team, Wolfsbane originally hails from Scotland, where she was brought up in a strict religious household. Her mutant ability to transform into a werewolf caused her to be cast out, and she ended up under Xavier’s care. 

Although Wolfsbane was murdered in UNCANNY X-MEN (2018) #17, she was resurrected at the start of the Krakoan Era. However, she has been unable to get her son, Tier, returned to life as well.
