VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #1
VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #1

Long-time Avengers Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlet Witch, and the automaton Vision share a love story for the ages. But how did the all-powerful mystic and the synthetic man meet? When was their first kiss? Who proposed to who? We’ve got all the answers below (and the issues where it happened), so you can recap their romantic history in full on Marvel Unlimited!

FIRST MEETING (AVENGERS #76)

First Meeting of Scarlet Witch and Vision.
AVENGERS (1963) #76

It began in the workplace.

Scarlet Witch and Vision met while pursuing a higher calling with the Avengers, AKA Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While Wanda joined the team after having been a terrorist with the Brotherhood of Mutants, the synthetic Vision joined after he was created to destroy the Avengers by their enemy Ultron. Their first on-panel meeting occurred when Wanda was taken to another dimension by Arkon, a tyrannical brute-overlord who wanted to make her his bride. Vision did his best to save Scarlet Witch, and she did hers to protect him, despite not knowing who he was! Read their “not exactly a meet-cute moment” in AVENGERS (1963) #76!

FIRST SPARK (AVENGERS #91)

Vision rejects an emotional advance.
AVENGERS (1963) #91

Between their tumultuous backgrounds and unusual family ties, Scarlet Witch and Vision’s lives were ripe with conflict. But nothing gets in the way of old-fashioned chemistry.

Their first spark of flirtation happened during the Avengers’ KREE/SKRULL WAR, when both were taken captive by a Kree sentry and submitted to the mercy of fanatical enforcer, Ronan. But Scarlet Witch’s bold move to show her affection while tied up was initially rejected! By Vision! Her humanity was still overwhelming for the man made of wires, but Vizh did come around.

FIRST RECONCILLIATION (AVENGERS #108)

Vision comforts Wanda.

Following this emotional foul play, Vision learned a few things about feelings and human relationships at large. In AVENGERS #108, he approached Wanda at a difficult time in her life (her beloved brother Pietro had gone missing), and offered a supportive shoulder for her to lean on.

In the words of Thor: “Let’s give these guys a room.”

THE PROPOSAL (GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS #4)

Vision proposes to Wanda.
GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS (1974) #4

After winning a battle against the mighty mystic Dormammu from the Dark Dimension, and liberating her friend and witch tutor Agatha Harkness, Scarlet Witch and Vision received a moment’s peace. Harkness magically returned the pair to Avengers Mansion, and Vision poured out his mechanical heart! See how their victory leads to this magic moment!

THE WEDDING (GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS #4)

The (double) wedding of Scarlet Witch and Vision!
GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS (1974) #4

On the heels of the proposal, the engaged couple wasted no time in planning a wedding. Well, not really planning.

Wanda and Vizh jumped on an opportunity to get married right away, sharing their big day with fellow Avenger Mantis and her soon-to-be husband, a Cotati-plant man doppelgänger of Swordsman. Check out their delightful double wedding in GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS #4!

THE HONEYMOON (AVENGERS #137)

The Honeymoon!
AVENGERS (1963) #137

After their wedding, Scarlet Witch and Vision vacationed on a French Polynesian island for their honeymoon. Vision reluctantly wore a bathing suit for the first time, something Wanda relished. See some other tender moments from their time off in AVENGERS (1963) #137-139!

FIRST HOME (1982’S VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH)

Vision and Wanda's first home.
VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1982) #1

During the period in which the newlyweds departed the Avengers for a stint, they settled down in the suburbs of Leonia, New Jersey, building their first home together in 1982’s limited series VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH. See what challenges they faced as a married couple without the team. Nosy neighbors, trick-or-treaters, Super Villain siblings... it’s a wonder they made it out alive!

FIRST YEAR (1985’s VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH)

A moment of domestic bliss.
VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #4

During their first year of marriage, the twosome experienced some changes and hardships. After they rejoined the Avengers and Vision was named Chairman of the team, he became distracted, and the pressures added strain on their relationship. Then, they lost their first home when an anti-superhuman group burned down the house!

But the haters didn’t get them down. Wanda and Vision purchased a new house and began rebuilding their life in soapy style with VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #1-12! This “year in the life” series represents domestic bliss at its best.

THEN CAME BABIES... (VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH #12)

The birth of Billy and Tommy.
VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #12

As part of their new chapter, the couple became parents to a healthy set of twin boys! But how? Thanks to Wanda’s immense skill in chaos magic, she was able to create “Billy” and “Tommy” using her reality-altering powers in VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #12. Though it wasn’t long before the truth of the twins’ conception came about. As revealed by Scarlet Witch’s long-time friend Agatha Harkness, the twins were in fact missing pieces of the demonic Mephisto, which, when returned to him, ceased to exist. Read this heartbreaking loss in WEST COAST AVENGERS (1985) #52.

THE SEPARATION (WEST COAST AVENGERS #44)

Wanda confronts Vision about his new state.
WEST COAST AVENGERS (1985) #44

When Vision was taken apart and disassembled during his West Coast run, he returned to the team reprogrammed and without an emotional connection to Wonder Man—a vital component to his humanoid existence. The couple’s reunion was violent as Vision was now a shell, no longer retaining memories of his wife and the life they had built. Once Hank Pym restored Vision’s data he became more subdued, but his differences were so great that Scarlet Witch had difficulty interacting with her now-reconfigured husband. The friction between them grew, slowly collapsing their relationship over time. Vision eventually ended things with Wanda over the phone while she was in the hospital recovering from her spell with Immortus.

Read the entire “Vision Quest” saga in WEST COAST AVENGERS (1985) #42-45 for the fallout, and continue through issue #63 for the official “dissolution.”

Vision breaks up with Wanda.
“It’s over over” in WEST COAST AVENGERS (1985) #63.

THE "DEATH" OF VISION (AVENGERS #500)

The death of Vision.
AVENGERS (1998) #500

Wanda’s grief over the loss of her twins reared its ugly head once more, and she tried to recreate them. In vain. With her reality-manipulation powers, she caused several events that led to Vision crashing a Quinjet into the Avengers Mansion. (He later claimed he wasn’t in control of his faculties.) After this horrific accident, Vision melted, and several Ultron-like beings emerged from his mouth. In the fight that followed against the Ultrons, She-Hulk’s rage reigned supreme and she destroyed Vision. Read that brutal battle here, an indirect consequence of Wanda’s urgent desire to restore her sons.

AN INEVITABLE CONFRONTATION (AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #0)

Vision confronts Wanda about their past.
AVENGERS VS. X-MEN (2012) #0

After Tony Stark rebuilt Vision, the synthezoid rejoined the Avengers. Shortly thereafter, Avengers’ member Carol Danvers invited Scarlet Witch back to the mansion to reunite with her friends. Let’s just say that when Vision and Scarlet Witch came face-to-face after she used him to attack their friends, it was a powerful reminder of the love they had lost. See this more-than awkward moment play out in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN (2012) #0.

Despite all their ups and downs, the odd couple that is Scarlet Witch and Vision tried their best to make their unique lives work. And, while things didn’t work out romantically in the end, the two have now found friendship. In the eternal words of an eternal bard: “The course of true love never did run smooth.” But the journey is always worth it.
