Marvel RPG Developer Update #10

Avengers Expansion

Avengers Expansion officially releases in a few weeks. Between new rules, maps, history and character sheets, there’s something for everyone in this newest addition to the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game. We’d like to kick off the excitement by sharing the full table of contents and some sneak peeks of what to expect.

Iconic Items

Many Avengers and other super-powered characters carry items that are nearly as iconic as they are. This includes Captain America’s shield, Thor’s hammer (Mjolnir) and Wolverine’s adamantium claws, just to name a few. In the Core Rulebook, some of these are listed as Iconic Weapons and fall under the power of the same name. These are now part of a broader selection that we’re calling iconic items. Iconic items can include weapons, battle suits and utility gear.

This new system adds flexibility to creating your own iconic items as well as making existing ones feel more robust. Included within the expansion are updated versions of iconic weapons from previous character profiles so you can immediately utilize the new rules at your table.

Each iconic item features a number of elements. They include:

  • Origin: The origin the item has and gives its owner
  • Powers: The powers the item gives its owner
  • Restrictions: The restrictions placed on using the item
  • Power Value: How many power picks are required to own the item

Here’s a peek at Captain America’s shield and Iron Man’s standard armor, both of which are iconic items.

Headquarters

Teams of heroes like the Avengers often have headquarters — a base to rest and recuperate, discuss plans and train for upcoming adventures. Any group of heroes (or villains) can have a headquarters, from a single hero all the way up to a global organization like the Avengers.

Just as with a character, headquarters come with two kinds of labels: traits and tags. Traits have some kind of mechanical effect that the characters can use, usually during the downtime between missions. Each trait has a downtime activity listed for it, which usually comes with some kind of bonus that can be used during play. When a team takes a break at a headquarters, each character on the team can pick one downtime activity to participate in and earn bonuses. Tags describe aspects of the place that have more of a narrative than a mechanical effect.

Here's an example of each, as well as what a full headquarters profile will look like.

Alternate Forms

Another addition in this expansion is an update to the “alternate form” tag. A character with this tag will choose between three types of alternate forms with guidelines on how to create and manage each one. The main alternate forms are:

  • Cosmetic Change: The difference between forms is mostly in their looks or personality. For example, Tigra.
  • Power Down: The character’s alternate form has fewer powers than the primary form. For example, Hulk.
  • Power Swap: The character’s alternate form not only has super-powers, but they differ from the ones the primary form has. For example, Emma Frost.

Avengers Academy

To celebrate the release of Avengers Expansion and to mark the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game’s second anniversary, a bonus chapter — Avengers Academy — is available for download right now on Marvel.com/RPG. This chapter focuses on the young heroes brought together to train under the Avengers’ watchful eye. It also includes a map of the new Avengers Academy (as featured in the Avengers Academy Infinity Comic).

Gen Con

Gen Con is almost here! From July 31st to August 3rd! Swing by room 234 of the Indiana Convention Center (2nd floor of the Hoosier Concourse) to demo the game or join a play session with friends. You can check the session availability here. The Avengers Expansion will also be available in limited quantities for purchase ahead of its official release.
