The French Foreign Legion’s mercenary Jean-Paul DuChamp becomes Marc Spector, AKA Moon Knight’s almost-constant companion after they meet in Africa. Dubbed “Frenchie” by his ally, he’s instrumental in helping Moon Knight in his early days as a costumed champion.
The French Foreign Legion
Jean-Paul DuChamp gets involved with Isabelle Kristel, who was secretly an agent for DGSE intelligence. When Kristel breaks off their relationship, DuChamp joins the French Foreign Legion, and ultimately becomes a soldier of fortune to forget about her. While operating in Africa, he befriends fellow mercenary Marc Spector, who nicknames him “Frenchie.” DuChamp serves mainly as a pilot on his assignments, and he and Spector eventually find work alongside Raoul Bushman, AKA Bushman.
When Bushman leads a raid on Selima, Egypt, intending to loot Dr. Peter Alraune, Sr.’s archaeological dig of the Tomb of King Sety II, Spector turns against Bushman for murdering Dr. Alraune. Bushman leaves Spector in the desert to die, but Spector is seemingly brought back to life by the Egyptian god Khonshu, and Spector became Khonshu’s instrument of vengeance. DuChamp helps Spector attack Bushman’s forces that same evening and becomes one of his closest confidants.
Experienced Pilot
DuChamp is an accomplished pilot. He’s extensively experienced with unarmed combat, swords, and firearms.
After losing the use of his legs, he has limited mobility and seldom utilizes his mercenary skills. He uses a sophisticated wheelchair with hover technology and built-in weapons, and eventually uses cybernetic prosthetic legs for mobility.
As Bloodline, he can transform into his ancestors, including Henri Remont and Pierre LaTrec. Bloodline has full mobility and each ancestor’s skills, but DuChamp has no influence over their actions, and often cannot control the transformations. It is not clear whether he still retains his Bloodline powers.
Criminal Elements
Cajun Creed kills DuChamp’s former girlfriend Isabelle Kristel, and he works with Moon Knight to capture Creed.
Being associated with Moon Knight often puts him in harm’s way. DuChamp nearly perishes at the hands of Simon Maddicks, AKA Killer Shrike, and later loses the use of his legs after Moon Knight’s brother Randall Spector, AKA Shadow Knight, sets off an explosion that cripples him.
Close Friends
DuChamp and Dr. Peter Alraune's daughter Marlene Alraune become Spector’s trusted confidants while Spector adopts a costumed identity as Moon Knight and becomes a New York-based crimefighter. DuChamp designs and pilots Moon Knight’s personal aircraft, the Mooncopter.
Mercenary Life
Seeking to spy on the crime cartel, the Committee, Spector had DuChamp infiltrate their ranks as “Monsieur LeBlanc.” Exploiting Moon Knight’s obscurity, “LeBlanc” arranged for the Committee to “create” Moon Knight as their own agent and hired Spector to capture the Jack Russell, AKA Werewolf by Night, for them. Moon Knight played along with the Committee, but ultimately released Russell from their captivity. DuChamp continued to spy upon the Committee until Moon Knight finally dismantled the organization.
DuChamp was eventually reunited with Isabelle Kristel, but she was killed on assignment by Cajun Creed. The heartbroken lover helped Moon Knight capture Creed. DuChamp aided Moon Knight on many adventures, even after the criminal Killer Shrike, nearly killed him by crashing the Mooncopter. However, when Moon Knight’s brother Shadow Knight set off an explosion at Spector Manor, DuChamp’s legs were crushed by debris, and he was crippled.
DuChamp continued to assist Moon Knight, but his injuries made piloting an infrequent task. His then-girlfriend Chloe Tran revealed herself to be a member of the Knights Templar, an ancient order engaged in a centuries-long conflict with the Hellbent, a race of supernatural creatures. Chloe informed DuChamp that he was the Bloodline and possessed a post-hypnotic ability to transform into any of his ancestors through concentration.
As Bloodline, DuChamp helped Moon Knight combat the Hellbent, but Moon Knight seemingly died in battle with Hellbent leader Seth Phalkon. Khonshu resurrected Moon Knight again, and DuChamp served as his pilot. After breaking his own legs in a vicious fight with Bushman, Spector became indignant toward his friends and drove DuChamp away.
DuChamp later became involved with Rob Silverman, with the partners opening the restaurant “En Table” together. When a new Committee sought revenge on Spector for the earlier organization’s defeat, they had an agent give DuChamp a terrible beating. They miscalculated the effect this would have on Spector who resumed his Moon Knight guise to destroy the new Committee. DuChamp remains Moon Knight’s ally; despite utilizing his cybernetic prosthetic legs, he offered up Spector’s younger, long-time associate Ray Johnson to serve as Spector’s new pilot. Silverman currently serves as Spector’s physical therapist.
When Ryan Trent, falsely disguised as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, came looking for Moon Knight, they asked DuChamp probing questions. Moon Knight later asked him to watch over his daughter and DuChamp was happy to do so for his old friend.
