Kayla Ballantine was hired as a secretary for Vaughn Security Systems. Kayla and Wendell Vaughn later became romantically involved. Moondragon attempted to break up their courtship, by using her powers to manipulate Kayla into kissing the Eternal Makkari. Later Kayla was inadvertently given a portion of the Star Brand's power by Quasar. The Star Brand was an infinite source of power from a dimension that was referred to as the New Universe.
