Biography

Biography

Luna Maximoff, an Inhuman/Mutant hybrid, is born to powerful parents, but unlike them, she is born human without any abilities. Exposure to the Inhumans Terrigen Mists unlock her empathic abilities and she must contend with not only her feelings, but also the feelings of others.

Inhuman/Mutant Hybrid

Luna was the first child born to the Inhumans on her namesake, the moon (to which the Inhumans had recently relocated). She is the daughter of Pietro Maximoff, AKA Quicksilver, and Crystalia Amaquelin Maximoff, AKA Crystal, making her a Mutant/Inhuman hybrid and royalty on her mother’s side.

Though her father Quicksilver’s mutant genes and Crystal’s Inhuman genes apparently neutralize each other, causing Luna to be born a normal human, lacking any powers. Disappointed, Quicksilver considers exposing her to the mutagenic Terrigen Mists, the source of the Inhumans’ super-powers. Despite Crystal’s protests and the unknown risks due to Luna’s hybrid nature, Inhuman law supported the father’s decision; but Quicksilver is dissuaded by Ben Grimm, AKA the Thing, and the Inhuman canid Lockjaw (partially through an apparent hoax describing Lockjaw as an Inhuman tragically mutated by Terrigenesis).

Empathic Abilities

Inhaling the Terrigen Mists unlocks Luna’s Inhuman ability to see auras in others, which appear to her in colors. Through these auras, she can see, alter or remove emotions. At first, she is unable to block or control this empathic power, so she wears sunglasses to dampen its intensity.

She can also sense others’ intentions, such as future decisions and actions, which allow her to make accurate predictions. She has some immunity to mind control and some ability to control mental inhibitors inside others’ minds.

Mad Menaces

The Inhuman Maximus Boltagon, AKA Maximus the Mad, proves to be an adversary when he attempts to manipulate her as a child to carry out his will, though she is able to resist his mind-control unlike others.

Fabian Cortez, the Acolyte who seemingly killed Luna’s grandfather, abducts Luna with the intent to kill her, but is stopped by the zealot Exodus. But he planned to kill her himself as well as her family members.

Fond Friendships

When Luna’s aunt Medusalith Amaquelin Boltagon, AKA Medusa, steps in to help the Fantastic Four oversee their think tank of super-geniuses at the Future Foundation, Luna expresses her desire to attend. She eventually becomes part of the roster and has a friendship with Adolf the Impossible Boy.

Feeling Her Way Through Life

When Crystal rejoined the Fantastic Four, Inhumans leader Blackagar Boltagon, AKA Black Bolt, assigned Maya as her nanny. Maya’s power to create environments protected Luna from terrestrial pollutants to which Inhumans were vulnerable, as well as in times of emergency. When Crystal later joined the Avengers, a new nanny, Marilla, moved into Avengers Mansion to care for Luna, protecting Luna via her formidable strength. After Luna witnessed Rita DeMara, AKA Yellowjacket’s murder by an Immortus-controlled Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, she was scared into silence. Iron Man later killed Marilla, further upsetting the toddler.

After Max Eisenhardt, AKA Magneto’s seeming death, Fabian Cortez, leader of Magneto’s Acolytes followers, attempted to “cleanse” Luna as a genetic throwback unworthy of her grandfather. Cortez abducted Luna to the island nation Genosha where another Acolyte, Exodus, apparently slew Cortez; however, Exodus then prepared to slay not only Luna, but also Crystal, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch for their rejection of Magneto. The X-Men and Avengers stopped Exodus and rescued Luna.

After Crystal, the Avengers (including Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlet Witch), and the Fantastic Four were seemingly killed battling the psychic entity Onslaught, Quicksilver allowed Luna to live under Herbert Wyndham, AKA High Evolutionary’s protection at Wundagore mountain, where Quicksilver himself had been born. Bova Ayrshire, AKA Bova, the evolved cow-woman whom Quicksilver considered like a mother, took special care of Luna. Bova’s care continued when Quicksilver relocated to the Evolutionary’s Hudson River castle. After those thought lost to Onslaught returned, Crystal briefly stayed with Quicksilver and Luna, then took Luna with her to New Attilan, the Inhumans’ new terrestrial home, and later back to the moon when the Inhumans again relocated.

Following Quicksilver’s being depowered on “M-Day,” he returned to Crystal and Luna. Denied access to the Terrigen Crystals he sought to restore his powers, Quicksilver secretly stole the Inhumans’ entire Terrigen Crystals supply, mutating himself and then taking Luna to Earth and mutating her as well. After Luna became unstable and even addicted to the Terrigen Mists, Quicksilver returned her to Attilan so the Inhumans’ healers could treat her. Quicksilver later claimed a Skrull imposter had stolen the Terrigen Crystals, but Luna told him she knew the truth.

She soon joined her aunt Medusa on a trip to the Future Foundation, the think tank of super-genius children run by the Fantastic Four. Medusa stepped in for the Fantastic Four for a time, and Luna was inspired to join the Foundation. Luna eventually became a member and helped them against such foes as the Wizard, who mind-controlled Medusa, and Ivan Kragoff, AKA Red Ghost

Luna next saw her father, Pietro, on television owning up to the terrible things he had done in his life, including lying about a Skrull imposter stealing the Terrigen Crystals. She found him immediately following and forgave him for his transgressions. She also channeled the feelings of one of his allies, Georgia, and noticing she was sad, used her powers to alter her emotion to make her feel better. Her father explained that Georgia was going through a lot with the loss of her parents and needed time to adjust to her new home and life. Luna was impressed that her dad was acting like a father. She also told him that she missed him and how things got weird at home after her mother left her husband, Ronan. Shocked, Pietro grabbed his daughter by the shoulders and squeezed them while confirming what she said, though hurt Luna in the process. He apologized just before the Inhuman Gorgon arrived to collect Luna on behalf of her mother, but Pietro fought him off with the help of Lorna Dane, AKA Polaris, his teammate on X-Factor. Luna’s mother Crystal arrived to get the full story and granted permission for her daughter to stay with Pietro.

Crystal later sends Luna to the Braddock Academy under Headmaster Brian Braddock, AKA Captain Britain. Luna then visited her mother on the Royal Inhuman Vessel, but she was so busy she had forgotten about Luna’s arrival. Luna soon informed her mother that she dropped out of the academy because it was being attacked constantly. Though her mother was upset considering what she and Pietro were paying for her attendance at the academy, Luna’s aunt Medusa allowed her to stay on the R.I.V.

Luna later joined her Aunt Wanda in Arbor City, Maryland to discuss a bogus contract with demons and help her get a sense of them. Seeing their auras, Luna offered her impressions, which helped Wanda understand their hateful intent and void the agreement.
