Biography

Biography

With the ability to mold reality and tear open space-time, the mutant Manifold can teleport himself and others instantaneously through portals. He joins heroic teams such as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, communicating with the universe and using his abilities to transport people from place to place.

Origins in the Outback

Seeking to counter the Hydra-compromised S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury accesses his archived files on “caterpillars,” young, unaffiliated super-powered children of other super-beings. Fury’s protégé, Daisy Johnson, AKA Quake, thus recruits Aboriginal Australian Eden Fesi–then under tutelage in Kata Tjuta, Australia from former X-Men ally and teleporter Gateway–to join her team (secretly Team White of Fury’s Secret Warriors).

Fesi’s first mission has him teleporting his group, comprising leader Quake, Sebastian Druid, AKA Druid, JT James, AKA Hellfire, Alexander Aaron, AKA Phobos, and Jerry Sledge, AKA Stonewall, as backup for Fury and trusted ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in their attempt to retrieve three Helicarriers from villainous HAMMER and Hydra forces. Team White responds to a distress call from Natasha Romanoff, AKA Black Widow, and Melissa Gold, AKA Songbird, but Norman Osborn, AKA Green Goblin’s forces intercept them. Underground and disoriented, Fesi could not initially generate an escape portal; when Fesi finally does, Osborn’s Olympian war god ally, Ares, cuts into the closing portal with his ax, disrupting Fesi’s control and allowing Osborn’s forces access to Fury’s hidden base, forcing further retreat.

Fesi later teleports his team to fight against Osborn and his allies’ siege on Asgard, and subsequently begins using a spear to help channel his power. Planning to end the war between the criminal Hydra and Leviathan global organizations by launching simultaneous attacks, Fury directs Fesi to teleport Team White into Hydra’s underground New Zealand stronghold, but intel from the traitorous Hellfire had already alerted Hydra. Fesi suffers a critical injury and as such Stonewall extracts him. Due to his severe injuries, Fesi is put into an induced coma. He recovers and returns to Kata Tjuta after Gateway’s apparent death.

Space-Time Teleporter

A universal shaper, Fesi can fold and twist space-time, mostly creating various size portals. He can generate multiple small portals simultaneously or larger ones to transport groups, even small spaceships. He determines what travels through the portal and how long it stays open, but has to remain in very close proximity. Mystical beings can disrupt his control.

Manifold uses binary code and mathematics for portal generation, but must have positional awareness and know where the endpoint is. His range seems virtually limitless, but is confined to his own universe/dimension. When T’Challa, AKA Black Panther, builds a Transverse Brace to push Fesi’s powers beyond their native plane, which it does successfully.

He is trained in hand-to-hand and firearm combat, and skilled at accurately throwing a spear. He meditates and has basic medical and excellent wilderness survival skills.

Teammates and Terrorists

While Fesi had a family, he doesn’t remember much of them. Though Gateway trains him in how to use his powers, and he becomes Fesi’s family.

Fesi joins S.H.I.E.L.D. and their elite Secret Warriors team, Team White. While on the team, he faces terrorists such as Green Goblin and his agents, HAMMER and Hydra’s forces. Later he joins the Avengers to face off against agents of the Builders, an ancient alien race who aggressively guided or destroyed life in the universe, and Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.).

The Many Travels of Manifold

Striving to expand the Avengers’ global reach, Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, asked Fesi to join the team. Initially hesitant because of past losses, Fesi agreed and was codenamed Manifold. He transported the team to Mars to confront agents of the Builders, Ex Nihilo, Abyss and an Aleph. Fesi then transported Avengers to the Shi’ar galactic rim to halt a seeming attack from beings fleeing the Builders. Returning to Earth to counter damage from Ex Nihilo’s “origin bombs,” organic devices that remapped genetics, Fesi encountered Adam, AKA Nightmask, and Kevin Conner, AKA Starbrand, and later transported Avengers to the Canadian origin bomb site. Between missions, Fesi covertly helped former teammate Daisy Johnson back up her memories in case her mind was wiped by S.H.I.E.L.D.’s efforts to keep secrets. After transporting Avengers to the Perth, Australia origin bomb site, Fesi was taken by Tamara Devoux, AKA Captain Universe, to Galador to witness its destruction by the Builders so he could inform the Avengers. Returning to Perth, he rescued fellow Avengers by shunting enemy A.I.M. agents through multiple portals. Following Captain Universe’s advice to get bigger to counter the impending threat of the Builders, the Avengers went to Mars, where Fesi channeled an image of Captain Universe through his spear to Abyss and Ex Nihilo. Revering the Uni-Power within Captain Universe, they agreed to join the Avengers. During the multi-species defense against the Builders, Fesi traveled behind enemy lines to rescue captured Avengers, teleport forces and aid refugee resettlement. He also brought Kree and Shi’ar warriors to help stop the death-worshiping Thanos and his Black Order’s rampage on Earth.

Fesi was among the mutants psychically consumed by a possessed David Haller, AKA Legion, but released when Haller freed himself. Multiversal degradation from the Builders’ war affected Fesi’s connection with surrounding space, leaving his powers erratic and unreliable, and he withdrew from active Avengers duty, but Captain Universe helped him refocus. Confident again, Fesi transported several Avengers and allies to the subversive A.I.M. organization’s island to bypass A.I.M.’s force field.

During the final incursion of Manifold’s reality, Earth-616, and Earth-1610, and in an attempt to save heroes from the end of everything, Manifold joined other heroes on a ship that acted as a lifeboat. Using the Transverse Brace to amplify his teleportation powers, he located other heroes, but expelled so much energy that it led to his death. Both universes collided and were each destroyed.

After the events of the final incursion, the Marvel Universe was restored as was Manifold, though he retained no memory of his death. He then joined T’Challa, AKA Black Panther, in Wakanda to help stop the revolts happening across the nation.

Manifold soon crossed the threshold of death to contact T’Challa’s late sister Shuri, who ultimately returned to the land of the living. A rebellion soon brewed in Wakanda, and Manifold fought the rebellion’s leaders, Tetu and Zenzi, supporting T’Challa, Shuri, and Wakandan security forces. After the battle, Wakanda became more of a republic to encompass all its people.

Later, Manifold joined T’Challa to meet the Emperor of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, N’Jadaka, through a time-distorting wormhole. Their captors stripped Manifold and T’Challa’s memories and while T’Challa became a slave, Manifold became an agent of the Empire. Manifold ends up leading an Askari army to fight the Maroons, a rebellion of the Empire’s ex-slaves until he freed himself of their grasp. He and T’Challa fought the empire and returned to Earth but Emperor N’Jadaka followed. Manifold supported T’Challa in protecting Wakanda.

Manifold then became the Logistics Director of space agency S.W.O.R.D., joining alongside the Mutant interplanetary spy Abigail Brand when she repowered the abandoned space station. After Knull, God of the Symbiotes, invaded Earth and formed a shell around it, Manifold traveled to Krakoa, the sovereign mutant island nation-state, to check on S.W.O.R.D.’s away team. The team was captured in symbiote cocoons at the mercy of a possessed Nathan Summers, AKA Cable, whom he defeated with the help of Joanna Cargill, AKA Frenzy. During this time, he also spied on S.W.O.R.D.’s former co-director Henry Gyrich, attended the first Hellfire Gala, and rescued Emperor Dorrek VIII, AKA Hulkling, from Dormammu.

Brand soon recruited Manifold onto her team X-Men Red to defend the Arakki of Arakko, but he left the team almost immediately, believing that the Arakki didn’t need them. He had also lost faith in Brand, believing that she was involved in Gyrich’s death. He went so far as to form his own team against her, which included Cable, John Proudstar, AKA Thunderbird, and Takeshi Matsuya, AKA Wiz Kid. They went against Brand and her ally Orbis Stellaris. Manifold came up against Stellaris’ Progenitors, who could control his powers. Cable saved him from their attack and Manifold teleported the Progenitors away, thanks to assistance from Lactuca the Knower. Both Stellaris and Brand were defeated and Manifold remained with S.W.O.R.D. under the agency’s new commander, Wiz Kid.

Manifold soon investigated missing criminals but was interrupted by Anna Marie, AKA Rogue, and Remy LeBeau, AKA Gambit. The pair were tasked by Irene Adler, AKA Destiny, to bring Manifold to her, per a vision she had of him playing a pivotal part in Krakoa’s future. Manifold refused, but Rogue offered her and Gambit’s help to find the missing. He agreed but set expectations that he wasn’t going to change his mind about Destiny. Manifold was soon taken by Power Broker’s minions and placed under mind control with an implant that if removed would kill him. Rogue and Gambit eventually rescued him, though the device remained and therefore Destiny placed him in stasis.
